As we farewell Mr Ian Yates AM, Acting Inspector-General of Aged Care, we reflect on the instrumental role he has had in establishing the Office of the Inspector-General of Aged Care (OIGAC). Under his leadership, the OIGAC formally commenced on 16 October 2023, marking a historic step as Australia’s first independent entity dedicated to overseeing the Government’s administration of the aged care system.

Ian has been a steadfast advocate for the rights of older people in Australia for over three decades. Since assuming the role of Interim Inspector-General in January 2023, he has been unwavering in his commitment, working to ensure the aged care system meets the future needs of older people in Australia.

Ian played a crucial role in the development and rapid enactment of the Inspector-General of Aged Care Act 2023. This legislation established the OIGAC, providing it with the independence and legislative powers to thoroughly investigate systemic issues. Following this significant milestone, Ian was appointed Acting Inspector-General, a role in which he continued his dedicated efforts to shine a light on the challenges within the aged care system.

During his time at the OIGAC, Ian achieved several notable milestones. He led the delivery of two reports on the Government’s progress in implementing the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, one of which was delivered before our transition to a statutory agency. Additionally, he initiated a review of My Aged Care, the government's portal for accessing aged care services, and provided critical analysis of the government's aged care reform package, highlighting the importance of a rights-based and person-centred system to protect older people.

“On a personal note, it has been a privilege to work with Ian. His wisdom and unwavering dedication have left a lasting impact.” said Paula Pearsall, Agency Executive Director.

“We will miss his insight and profound knowledge of the aged care sector, which has guided and inspired so much of our work. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter, but his legacy will undoubtedly continue to influence our work and the aged care sector positively. Ian, we thank you and wish you every success in the next chapter of your journey.”

Ian leaves the OIGAC in a strong and stable position, ready to welcome the inaugural Inspector-General, Ms Natalie Siegel-Brown, on 14 January 2025.
