Our role

We are an independent statutory agency, established to strengthen integrity and accountability in aged care.

Our vision

Our vision is an aged care system where every person receives kind, compassionate, high-quality care that promotes their rights, identity and independence.

Why we were established

The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (Aged Care Royal Commission) recommended that the Australian Government establish an:

  • Inspector-General of Aged Care
  • Office of the Inspector-General of Aged Care.

The intent of this recommendation was to ensure that the aged care system is subject to ongoing scrutiny and to hold government agencies accountable for their processes, decisions and performance.

The government established both the role of the Inspector-General and the Office on 16 October 2023 through the Inspector-General of Aged Care Act 2023.

What we do

Led by the Inspector-General, we provide informed, independent oversight of the aged care system.

We report to the Minister for Aged Care and Parliament on how the:

  • aged care system is managed, regulated and funded
  • recommendations of the Aged Care Royal Commission are being implemented.

We review and report on system-wide issues in the aged care system and identify opportunities for positive change. We also contribute submissions to inquiries and consultations about important matters related to aged care, identifying issues and recommending actions for positive change.

All of our work is grounded on evidence, experience and feedback from older people and the aged care sector.

We are genuinely interested in hearing about older people’s lived experience with the aged care system, but there are some things we cannot do. For example, we do not have the power to:

  • investigate or resolve individual complaints
  • intervene in individual cases
  • take action against specific providers or services.

We focus on the aged care system as a whole and do not duplicate the functions of other agencies, such as regulators, complaints bodies, or policy makers.
